Jillian White [she/her] is an artist of light and shadow born on the stolen land of the Okanagan peoples, now residing in xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory. After a decade in residence at Caravan Farm Theatre in the BC interior, Jill is putting roots back down in the lower mainland; equally at home layering the black box of a stage with light as shining it into the wild expanse of a woodland night.
In 2011 Jill graduated from Capilano University's Technical Theatre program and has since worked with companies such as Touchstone Theatre, Rumble Theatre, Arts Club Theatre Company, The Globe Theatre, Mayfield Dinner Theatre, The Charlottetown Theatre Company, Musical TheatreWorks, Delinquent Theatre, Pacific Theatre, The Frank Theatre Company, Alley Theatre, SpeakEasy Theatre, Shameless Hussy Productions, Classic Chic, Kitty Nights Burlesque, and of course, Caravan Farm Theatre. Three of her designs (Bright Blue Future, Never the Last, and Gross Misconduct) have been nominated for Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards.
Jill is a member of IATSE Local ADC659. She is especially interested in projects that are site specific, outdoors, or that deal with social or environmental justice.
Never the Last
“Jillian White’s chiaroscuro lighting, by turns glaring or hazy or lurid, serves to deepen the séance atmosphere.” -Lincoln Kaye, Vancouver Observer
Bright Blue Future
“Lighting designer Jill White gets to have fun with some nice results” -Mark Robins, Vancouver Presents
“Lighting designer Jill White uses to good effect some black light and isolates each of the characters, on occasion, in bright, overhead light. In one scene, she illuminates Cairns, squatting on a glass-top coffee table, from below. It’s a spooky, effective piece of lighting.” -Jo Ledingham, On the Scene
“One of the highlights of Bright Blue Future is the work of lighting designer Jill White…The show has an impressively consistent look about it, too, that starts with the disco lights in the lobby...Lighting designer Jill White does a spectacular job of tracking the characters’ extreme ups and downs: just wait for the cocaine special.” -Colin Thomas, The Georgia Strait
RUINED
“...the lights, especially the fairy lights and the effects during the gunshot scene was impressive.” -Jessica Kim, UBC Players Club
“Good lighting by Jillian White.” -Jerry Wasserman, Vancouverplays
Bar Mitzvah Boy
